Hiring: Executive Director

The Concord Land Conservation Trust is seeking a new leader with a passion for conservation to serve as Executive Director.

The Concord Land Conservation Trust (CLCT), a local non-profit organization that stewards more than 1,000 acres of protected land, is seeking a new leader with a passion for conservation to serve as Executive Director.

Reporting to the chair of the board of trustees and working primarily at the Land Trust’s office in Concord, this position will manage the organization’s activities and execute its strategic priorities during a time of growth and transition.

The ideal candidate will bring vision, energy, and creativity to the role, and will welcome the challenges of carrying out multiple responsibilities, designing and executing initiatives to advance CLCT’s mission, and working independently while engaging trustees, members, and volunteers.


Position Responsibilities

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for advancing CLCT’s mission of land protection and stewardship through leadership in the areas of community engagement, fundraising, and property management. In collaboration with a dedicated board of trustees and assisted by a seasonal land intern and a number of independent contractors and consultants, the ED will develop and carry out CLCT’s programmatic and strategic goals.


Organizational Leadership

  • – Partner with the board of trustees to develop and carry out strategic and programmatic goals.
  • – Actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, committees, partners, and funders.
  • – Support and strengthen the board of trustees and its committees and, working in partnership with the board, identify and cultivate new leaders in the community.
  • – Assist in preparing the annual budget.
  • – Send meeting minutes, agendas, and reminders to trustees for the monthly meetings.
  • – Maintain files and archives.
  • – Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.


Community Engagement and Development

  • – Working with trustees, establish annual and long-term financial and fundraising plans to ensure the sustainability of the organization.
  • – Build and cultivate relationships to secure resources needed to carry out CLCT’s annual and long-term goals.
  • – Manage membership development, fundraising and stewardship, including:
    •    – Issuing annual and special funding appeals
    •    – Ensuring timely acknowledgement of donations
    •    – Maintaining financial and donor records
    •    – Maintaining CLCT’s membership database
  • – Develop outreach and communication strategies.
  • – Define, publicize, and manage activities for volunteers.
  • – Plan and host educational and recreational activities for members, students, and others.
  • – Collaborate with local and regional environmental, educational, and cultural organizations.
  • – Provide a visible and professional presence.
  • – Keep the office open to the public on a regular schedule (once COVID restrictions ease).
  • – Manage day-to-day office activities.
  • – Respond to mail, e-mail, and telephone inquiries, routing callers to trustees as required.
  • – Maintain an engaging website and social media presence and prepare and distribute a periodic newsletter.


Land Stewardship

  • – Oversee stewardship of trails, mowed fields, and invasive control projects including managing contracts.
  • – Develop and implement management plans for CLCT properties.
  •  -Regularly inspect CLCT properties.
  • – Manage the monitoring of conservation restrictions held by CLCT.
  • – Recruit, hire, and manage seasonal land steward intern.
  • – Identify volunteer projects and supervise volunteers in land management activities.


Job Skills and Experience Required

  • – Data base management
  • – Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • – Able to learn specialized CLCT database software (Abila)
  • – Background in organizational management, environmental science and/or land management or eagerness to learn these critical skills


Additional desirable knowledge or experience: 

  • – Website maintenance and/or creation capability (WordPress)
  • – Experience with social media content creation
  • – Understanding of basic bookkeeping and QuickBooks


Time Requirements

  • – Job attendance 40 hours per week
  • – Regular office hours at least part of the week; some remote work possible
  • – Attend and assist at CLCT events as required, occasionally on weekends and evenings

  • – Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • – Commitment to land conservation and the mission of CLCT
  • – Ability to work independently and self-manage effectively
  • – Strong organizational skills
  • – Ability to work well with individuals and partner organizations
  • – Flexibility
  • – Experience with nonprofits a plus
  • – Access to a car and valid driver’s license; travel is primarily local
  • – Physically capable of hiking and working in the outdoors and using small handheld tools
